RSD/CRPS

Assisting Patients with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy/Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is a crippling chronic pain syndrome.  It can result in a complete inability to engage in one’s chosen career.  The medical bills, including those for spinal cord stimulators, physical therapy, ketamine injections, and other types of therapeutic treatment, can be extraordinarily high.  For many suffering from CRPS, they face a lifetime of such medical expenses and a dependency upon social security and Medicare.  Unfortunately, when your CRPS/RSD was caused by the negligence of a third-party, his or her insurance company and attorneys will frequently deny that you actually have complex regional pain syndrome, despite the diagnosis of your doctors.  When this happens, you need a law firm experienced in helping people with CRPS / RSD.

Our firm recently represented an individual who had been diagnosed with RSD as a result of a crush injury that took place at another company’s workplace. Separate from any workers compensation benefits, the corporation that was the site of where the injury took place settled with our client for $200,000.00.

Basics of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy / Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex regional pain syndrome is a disease that can manifest with any number of subjective and/or objective signs.  Among those are:

  • Changes to the skin such as color change, dryness, and shininess;
  • Muscle spasms;
  • Severe burning pain disproportionate to the original injury;
  • Increased sweating;
  • Unusual hair growth;
  • Sensitivity to heat, touch, or other stimuli;
  • Swelling;
  • Tremors;
  • Weakness; and
  • Muscle wasting.

The disease typically begins with some type of trauma, usually to one of the limbs.  The traumatic injury can be as serious as crush injury or gunshot wound, or as small as a needle stick or bee sting.  The exact process of the disease is poorly understood, but it is believed that it starts with an unnatural response by the sympathetic nervous system.
